Whether you are traveling to Italy for business or pleasure, learning the basics of the Italian language will be an immense help. Just having an understanding of the day-to-day words will help you on your journey and make the whole trip an easier experience.

With today’s technology it’s so much easier to learn Italian and one of the latest methods is using your iPhone or iPad! If you have an Apple iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch you will be familiar with the App Store and the wealth of useful (and not so useful!) Apps available. Many Apps are free whilst others are only a few pounds so it is well worth trying a few language Apps to see which ones work best for you.

One of the best Apps for learning Italian is Italian 101 which uses several different techniques to help you improve your learning. You can try flashcards, multiple choice, puzzle or write-in. The interface is easy to use and you can track your progress each time. With many different categories to learn it will keep you occupied for a while. There is also a free version to try with less categories.

The beauty of using your iPhone or iPad for learning Italian is that you can do it anytime, anywhere. No need to go to a class after work. You can learn the Italian language in your own time, at your own pace. Just five minutes here and there will be enough to learn the basics. Here are some of the other iPhone Apps we have tried which we recommend for learning Italian:

iSpeakItalian
FREE Italian Essentials
Learn Italian Quick
Basic Italian For Dummies
Learn Italian Vocabulary
Free Italian Tutor
Learn Italian with Busuu
You Have Words Italian
Free Pocket Italian Beginner
Italian Baby Flashcards
Italian Word of the Day
LearnEasy – Italian Language

These can all be found in the Apple AppStore and there are more coming all the time. Download a few and see which you like – perhaps a combination of several will give you a broader understanding of the language basics. So now you can use your iPad or iPhone in a useful way by learning Italian and trying out your new language skills on your next visit to Italy!

One more App worth mentioning, whether you are learning Italian or any language is Word Lens. This is an amazing little App that uses your iPhone camera. Point it at some Italian writing (such as a menu) and it will translate the words into English on the screen! As long as there is enough light in the room it works really well and is quite addictive!

There are even more ways to learn Italian on your phone, but we’ll leave that for another article in the future. In the meantime, try out some of those language Apps and let us know how you get on by writing a comment below…
